Behind the Scenes Post! (Trrisuf's side)

Hi, Tri Here! First of all, thank you so much to everyone who has played rotten angel so far! Your messages were so lovely to hear. I’m glad I can join this vn development together with Sylvan and Yonnechi. If I have to define two words for the behind the scene process, I would say it was fun & insightful! Everyone is just simply an expert in their own scopes (can’t wait for future collaboration with them already).

Okayy, so yeah, I’m involved in UI design and a little bit of the branding side of rotten angel. That means I worked on the logo too! And here I want to talk more about how the logo development was like and what the logo stands for. Let’s go!

Research & Analysis

  1. What is the VN community like?
  2. What is the story and the meaning of rotten angel?
  3. Who is the target market for this VN?

First, I need to know and get familiar with VN community, because before I’ve never played any VNs and I never knew that there was a cool platform like Itch.io that facilitates people who loves to play and make VN (and there’s also a lot of cool events like Spooktober too? Where I have been all this time, omg). I want to say thanks to Sylvan and Yonnechi who  made this process easier for me, because you know, they are the people in that community.

After that, I continued to read and learn the story of rotten angel that Sylvan had already made (as you know Sylvan’s writing skills are beyond!). In this stage, I need to dig deep to not just read the story but also try to capture the same feeling as Sylvan’s writing. So, I’d know what the meaning and message of the story was. At the same time, it also helped me to get to know the character's personality and motivations even more.

Next, as a brand designer, I’m always so used to preparing everything (lol). That is why besides knowing all about rotten angel, I also need to know the type of people who will be playing rotten angel. It not only helped me to know how I’d need to translate rotten angel to the visual form but also how I’d need to deliver that effectively and precisely.

Logo Design

As you guys have already seen, this is the rotten angel logo with just a simple look with only the name of rotten angel itself, without any decoration or element. It actually contains a lot of things in it. Also if you’ve already completed the vn, you guys would know that there is something in the logo. So let’s talk about it.

 #1

First, the two connected letters “t” represent two individuals who come from the same bloodline (Evan & Enjel).

#2

Second, the word “en” modified from “an” represents twins where one of them has a condition or abnormality 👀.

#3

Third, a single quotation mark to symbolize relationships and loss. As you know, the overall story revolved around these two themes. But why does a single quotation mark represent that? It’s because they are often used in contractions, like 'don’t,' 'can’t,' or 'won’t,' where some letters disappear, symbolizing loss, and at the same time, they connect two words into one, representing relationships.

 #4

Fourth, it’s a “j” letter and man symbol ♂️.

 #5

Fifth, ENJEL’s name!

 #6

Sixth, EVAN's name!

So yeah, now you know 😙👌

Above is the logo structure and a closer look at the logo, along with some variations. You can see that the logo has a bit of texture, which makes it align more with rotten angel’s theme, that everything seems fine, yet haunting at the same time.

#2 One of the logo concepts for rotten angel that was almost used

Closing

Once again, thank you so much to everyone who has played rotten angel! A big thanks as well to my team, Sylvan & Yonnechi!

Every word and all the support that rotten angel has received means so much to us, so we really appreciate your continued support!

By the way, I just want to say that I love collaborating with other creative people and taking part in any art initiatives. So, feel free to reach out to me!

The logo breakdown was so interesting! I noticed the first two details you mentioned, but the fact that Enjel and Evan's names are hidden in it is so clever and absolutely surprised me.

RIGHT??? Sorry when I first heard Tri breaking down the logo, my jaw was DROPPED, like ???

He really appreciated your comment too! So thank you!!

this was such a an interesting read, especially the detail of the single quotation mark -- woah! i love the intricacies of typography and logo design. i am curious who's the little guy in the almost-used logo supposed to represent 👀

Thank you very much!! Tri was very happy to hear that! I was also surprised at how many details that were included in the logo when he first showed me too LOL

If I remember correctly, the little guy is just a representative/imagery of the whole story. Like a logomark if you would. It's supposed to show the mushroom plus the eeriness and mystique of the story. But we scrapped it because it might give the impression that there's a monster involved when there aren't any haha

Ahh cool! But, totally makes sense to drop it lol. Thanks for the explanation <33
